There have been major remarkable improvements in the education system over the recent years. However, there is still a difference in the achievement of education between children from different social classes.
The social class has a direct bearing on the success opportunities for a child, especially in the education system. Statistics show that children from the middle class on average perform better than children from the low class. This is because; the middle-class children have the opportunity to achieve higher in their secondary levels, stay longer in full-time education and end up taking many more places in university. On the other hand, the children from lower social class do not achieve as much. They may experience disruptions in their education due to lack of enough resources and other basic amenities. As a matter of fact, wealthier parents are in a position to afford to send their children to private schools which obviously provide better education standards.
This is an internal factor that can cause differing attainment levels of children. As expected, children from a wealthy social class will most likely interact with their teachers. This is because; they are not many in a class as they might be in a private school. Private schools will always aim at providing quality education to their children. Being a business entity, then great standards are expected. The children normally spend quality time with their teachers and can enquire as much as they need to. On the contrary, public schools are in most cases overcrowded. Being sponsored by the government, they are expected to have a bigger number of children from the lower social class. This, in turn, means that these children have no time to interact one on one with their teachers like in private schools. Therefore, their performance is expected to be much lower than that of children from wealthier social classes.
Cultural equipment is an external factor that affects the quality of education in the two social classes. Cultural equipment mainly includes the language, self -discipline and reasoning skills of the children. It is expected that children from the middle social class have a proper language in communication. A big number of parents from this social class are elites; therefore they have a good language of communication. You would expect that children from lower social classes have challenges in proper language and communication skills.
In contrast to the middle-class parents, lower class parents were not privileged in accessing education. A bigger percentage of the lower class families are bred and brought up in low-income environments and neighborhoods. This might not always be the case but usually, the language is totally different as a result of influence from the street language (informal). The use of language plays a critical role in educational achievement. The use of deficient language by lower class families leaves the children unable to develop the necessary language skills. Thus, such children will grow up incapable of abstract thinking and will be unable to describe and explain concepts in proper language fit for the school.
Parents who have negative attitudes or no views on education will definitely impact this on their children. Their children’s abilities are weakened as they receive no encouragement from home. This largely shows that these parents are less ambitious for their children and they do not really care about their performance in schools. Such parents visit the schools less often and therefore do not get an opportunity to discuss their children’s performance with their teachers. Eventually, the children end up having little motivation to perform better at school.
Material deprivation generally means that there is a lack of material necessities such as enough housing an income to lead their day to day activities. Statistics also show that poverty is more linked with students who do not perform really well. Poor housing conditions affect the children’s performance as most children are from big number families.in connection to this, overcrowding can be a hindrance to study as there is no adequate space. Some families even live in temporary structures; wherein studying at home is quite a challenge unlike their counterparts who have their own rooms equipped with a study desk and chair, some even having entire rooms set aside for studying (study rooms).
Gender is considered as an external factor that has affected the quality of education. Gender has been targeted to have a major on children’s during their education. Over the recent years, there has been a gender disparity in terms of achievements. There has been a lot of girl child empowerment which has largely overtaken boys. Earlier on, girls’ attendance in schools was affected by the fact that they did not have good sanitary conditions compared to boys, more so in developing countries, where girls were majorly affected by the fact that they could not go to school when they were on their menstruation cycles. However, with the growing and developing countries, such facilities are now easily accessible. Surprisingly, the same predicament might be facing some who come from families at the lowest end of the lower class.
Changes in family structure and changes in women employment have led to women questioning their roles as females. For instance, a household that incorporates of one parent can affect the girl’s attitude. This is because the girl may see their mother taking the role of the homemaker and also the bread winner. This makes the girl grow up as an independent woman, and they end up working so hard.
The Division between the Social Classes has an impact on the Quality of Education
This kind of division is the principal impact on the student’s performance and behavior. Students that belong to a lower social, economic class attend to public schools, and therefore they get an idea that their education system is less advanced than those in private schools. This kind of division lowers their self-esteem which does not boost their morale in learning. In most cases, they will even start to question the kind of education that they receive. This generally leads to the lack of putting the effort in their schools as they almost feel like their future is dictated.
Teachers at public schools tend to slack off more than those in private schools. Again, this is not to say that all of them do, but you’re less likely to find such in the private schools. Having unprepared teachers in public schools has greatly contributed to producing unprepared students. Additionally, teachers from private schools have to meet more requirements as they go through interviews and pass selective processes to demonstrate that they have adequate knowledge for their jobs.
School infrastructure has largely affected the performance of students. Some schools are very well funded with huge libraries and fully equipped labs while some just manage with the bare minimum. Of course, schools that are well funded most likely are private and have high schools fees so only a particular class can find their way there. Consequently, the performance of students who go there will obviously be better than that of their counterparts.
The topic of social class is usually a sensitive one, and it’s quite challenging to discuss it without alluding to some stereotypes or clichés. However, as much as they may seem “politically incorrect”, some just can’t be ignored as that’s the situation on the ground! Social class does affect the quality of education of a student, whether the student is aware of it or not. However, with determination and focus, a student can succeed no matter what obstacles are in his or her way.
